Ice Cream

Just a short quick post.  I was craving ice cream the other night and my BFF suggested this:

ice cream

Not strict Paleo.  It has cane sugar in it.  But this is the best tasting non dairy ice cream I have ever had and I just had to share it!

Raised Garden – Northland Farming

I’m sitting out by the fire on this beautiful summer evening with my laptop because I just can’t bear to be inside.fire2 Summer is a short season here in Northern Wisconsin and being a person who prefers the warm weather I need to soak up every moment I can.  It helps me last the winter.

I can’t believe I haven’t posted about our raised garden.  In addition to our large garden at our friends house we did a raised garden at our house in town.  We decided to start out with one small one this year and see how it goes.  Once again , my talented husband amazed me.  He looked at some designs online and then went out and built it.  Some two by somethings and four by something else and some nails and/or screws and we have a garden.  Amazing!  We shared a couple of yards of dirt with my father in law who also built raised gardens this year.

We have tomato’s, peppers, broccoli and spinach in it.  Please ignore the weeds.  We did weed it after I took this picture.   I went out early this morning and picked spinach for lunches!  I can’t wait for the rest of our plants to start bearing fruit!

I put one of my blueberry plants in there too.  It’s doing so well!  Next year I plan on having a raised garden dedicated to blueberry bushes.  I can’t wait to eat these berries!

Our big gardens are doing awesome too.  We are going to have a busy autumn canning and freezing all of our bounty!

We are loving doing the urbanish gardening at our house in town and our big gardens in the country.  We’ve lived in suburbia, Brooklyn, NY and the wide open farming country of Iowa and loved all three.  It seems God has blessed us with a mix of all that we love here in Superior.

Rocks and Sea Glass

The other day I was in a store and I found myself drawn to a jar of rocks.  I thought this is really cool.  I love the way this looks.  I just couldn’t buy a jar of rocks though.  I have jars at home and I was sure I could find some rocks.  I’m not really a Pinterest project person. Crafts aren’t a strength of mine but I figured I could handle a rock jar.

I’ve never  really been a collector of anything but I love the idea of having my house decorated with items from the environment around me.  I’ve never gone hunting for rocks or sea glass before.  Thankfully I live next to Lake Superior and that seemed like a good place to start the hunt for my homemade rock jar.

rocks1 My husband, son and I had a morning free so we headed to our favorite beach Wisconsin Point and spent the morning rock hunting.  Hubby and I rock hunted, my son was quickly lured into the lake to do some swimming.

It turned out to be a really fun family activity.  And we had some good luck.  We found blue, green and clear sea glass and an agate among the other pretty rocks and pebbles we collected.

We got a decent start on my rock jar and had a great time making some family memories!  I threw in this last picture just because it is so beautiful!

Wisconsin Point

During the summer one of our favorite places to go is Wisconsin Point.  It’s a long stretch of sandy beach surrounded by forest and Lake Superior.  You can see the hillside of Duluth and the ships out in the lakes.  There is a stoic white lighthouse with a red roof. On a still day, the gentle lapping of the water is mesmerizing and on a strong windy day the powerful waves crashing on the beach are a site to behold.  Nothing can soothe the soul after a long day like a few hours at this beautiful beach.

Wisconsin Point is also an entry point for ships.  wp6We have been out there numerous times but we have never been out there when a ship has come through. Then the other night we were just starting to pack up to leave and I noticed a ship that looked as if it was lining up to come in. We jumped in the truck and drove down further down the beach to the entry point.  I was right! The ship was coming through the entry point!  This huge ship was close enough to talk to the crew.  They even blew the horn for Noah when he asked.  I had no idea how long these ships, or are they boats? Anyway, I had no idea that these Great Lake’s ships are so long.  It was so fun and so exciting to actually be there when a ship came through the entry.  I am hoping since we spend so much time at this beautiful place that we will get to see another ship come through.  Maybe next time it will be a salty (a ship that does both lake and ocean) and we can see what the differences are.

If you haven’t been to Wisconsin Point you should definitely put it on your list of destinations this summer.

Northland Farming- Chickens!

Our chicken are growing up fast.  No more cute fluffy little chicks, they are now feathery teenagers.  I came home from work the other day and found that Henrietta was missing from the box.  Thankfully she was just behind the couch and we were able to catch her and return her to her sisters.  They were obviously ready to be moved outside.  So we (and when I say we, I mean my husband) got moving on building their coop.

My husband is amazing. He looks at some pictures of coops, goes to Menards and then goes out to the garage and BAM we have a chicken coop.  And a super awesome one at that. The girls love their coop, though they’ve been a little hesitant to get out into their yard.  Henrietta is the only adventurous one.  She got right out into the yard and checked things out while the others sat in the doorway squawking at her.  I can’t wait for them to start laying eggs.
