Exploring Michigan – Porcupine Mts

In June we went on a short little trip to explore a different side of Lake Superior. We drove to the Porcupine Mountains in Michigan near the town of Ontonogan.  The drive to Michigan was absolutely beautiful.  We drove through parts of Wisconsin we had never been to before.  There will definitely be at least a day trip to Ashland, WI and I see some fishing in our future on the Brule.

We were completely surrounded by such beautiful and thick foliage that as we approached the park I don’t think we even realized we were gaining in altitude.  I can’t wait to go back in the fall.  I imagine that the fall colors must be unbelievably beautiful there.

Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park is huge.  It has 59,000 + acres.  There are two more modern campgrounds and multiple camping sites and cabins that you can backpack into.  There are rivers, waterfalls and lakes to hike to and explore and amazing access to Lake Superior.

We were there for about half a day total and I don’t think we even scratched the surface of what this park has to offer.  What we did see was beautiful and very different from the north shore of Lake Superior where we live.  The beaches were much more sandy and it didn’t have the rugged bluff look that the North Shore does.  I love exploring new places in this great northland!

Superior 4th Of July

I think the 4th of July is my favorite holiday.  First, I love summer foods.  Fresh and grilled veggies, fruit salads, potato salads, BBQ’s, watermelon, and s’mores just to name a few. Yum! I am currently eating my way through my MIL’s left over potato salad.  It’s my favorite.  I love getting together with friends and/or family and I love the fireworks and the feeling you get while watching them.

This 4th my hubby and I both had to work a day shift which was totally perfect because then we had our evening free.  For the first time in 20 years the city of Superior had their 4th of July celebration down Barkers Island water front.  They had a small carnival for kids, a car show, vendors and bands playing right up until the fireworks.

Of course in true Northern Wisconsin fashion it was 57 degrees. 4th3My in laws came over and we had a delish summer meal and since we only live 5 blocks from Barkers Island it was an easy walk down to enjoy the festivities.  We arrived just as the last band for the night, Aftershock was beginning to play.   They were great!  We will definitely be hunting down where and when their shows are. My kid danced the night away and had a blast.  One of the lead singers even came down and danced and sang with my him.  It was such a great time!

The fireworks were AMAZING!  Perfect length and really beautiful.  It was so relaxing to sit near the lake bundled under blankets (note a small tone of sarcasm) and watch the fireworks surrounded by my fellow Superians.

Superior you did an amazing job with the 4th of July celebration this year. I can’t wait to see what you have planned for next year!  I love my city!

Rocks and Sea Glass

The other day I was in a store and I found myself drawn to a jar of rocks.  I thought this is really cool.  I love the way this looks.  I just couldn’t buy a jar of rocks though.  I have jars at home and I was sure I could find some rocks.  I’m not really a Pinterest project person. Crafts aren’t a strength of mine but I figured I could handle a rock jar.

I’ve never  really been a collector of anything but I love the idea of having my house decorated with items from the environment around me.  I’ve never gone hunting for rocks or sea glass before.  Thankfully I live next to Lake Superior and that seemed like a good place to start the hunt for my homemade rock jar.

rocks1 My husband, son and I had a morning free so we headed to our favorite beach Wisconsin Point and spent the morning rock hunting.  Hubby and I rock hunted, my son was quickly lured into the lake to do some swimming.

It turned out to be a really fun family activity.  And we had some good luck.  We found blue, green and clear sea glass and an agate among the other pretty rocks and pebbles we collected.

We got a decent start on my rock jar and had a great time making some family memories!  I threw in this last picture just because it is so beautiful!
